Building on our presentation in April about Jonathon Haidt's book, "The Anxious Generation," we invite participants to create action plans for schools to provide more playful recess in our schools and communities.

SHC Consultants Dr. Charlene Woodham Brickman and Dr. Cathy Ramstetter conduct a three-part pre-conference workshop: Rx for the “Anxious Generation”: Quality Recess & Play-full Schools.
Part one: Review of the research on the importance of recess and unstructured play.
Part two: creating a playful safe and inclusive recess, considering built-in environment, physical space, social environment/climate time and duration in the schedule of the school day.

We'll provide a briefing on the book, then invite you to share how we, as play advocates, researchers, & playful people can bring more play to our schools and communities.

In October and November, 2022, Charlene and Cathy had the opportunity to speak at International Play Association-USA, Action For Healthy Kids National Conference, and finished up at the Head to Toe Conference about the benefits and components of quality recess, and to encourage participants to advocate for recess for all students in their communities! Thanks to all who attended and have already connected with stakeholders in their communities.
Charlene went on from these three conferences to present with her 10-year-old granddaughter Harper at
NAEYC . Harper shared her story about how recess has been diminished to a meager 5 minutes in her school, making a strong case for herself and her peers that recess is a right.
