Mindful Monitoring© is a way of watching the play space during each recess time, to ensure it is safe, physically and socially, and to allow students to select their activity of choice and even engage in rough-and-tumble play. For the monitors, it’s about knowing the students, and being able to differentiate between roughhousing and aggressive behaviors. Mindful Monitoring© practices utilize evidence-based strategies of supervising play and nurturing the development of the whole child.

We provide Professional Development which underpins student-friendly recesses that are safe and inclusive, supporting play and learning.

While Mindful Monitoring© occurs in the recess space, it relies on buy-in and consistency in the ways all adults teach, supervise and engage with students. Our training model is collaborative, building capacity for sustainability in the school’s infrastructure. Mindful Monitoring© is more than just a playground practice. It becomes part of the school’s culture.

Mindful Monitoring© provides faculty, staff and students a new way to ensure a safe, supportive, and collaborative culture. For fidelity we recommend a minimum of three post-training virtual sessions to support and reinforce concepts and skills.   Components of Training and Coaching

  • School leaders complete an initial assessment of the school's outdoor space, including photos

  • Students, staff and faculty complete recess surveys

  • Direct assessment, observation: recess and other breaks, lunch, and transitions

  • Training-professional development by grade-band

  • Real-time lunch and recess staff and student coaching

  • Post-training virtual/in-person follow-up

  • Facilitate inclusion of students in decisions/implementation of safety, recess expectations
