Dr Cathy Ramstetter “Dr R”
I am Dr. R, as the students call me, and I am a Health Educator with experience in school health leadership, community-level health promotion, service learning and teaching. I am grateful to have engaged the efforts of many to nurture health-wellness successes, in schools, in the community and as a researcher.
My current work focuses on helping schools foster children’s healthy growth and development—intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically. Specifically, I advocate for playful recess as an essential component of schooling. Recess ought to be part of a comprehensive wellness policy and school improvement plan. Recess and play do not take away from learning; rather, recess, rest and play rejuvenate our brains to expand learning potential. And, recess and play are the right of every child. (UN Convention on the Child, Article 31)
I am the co-author of the American Academy of Pediatrics Policy on Recess. In April of 2020, I was a founding member of the Global Recess Alliance. I am proud and humbled to be a part of this prestigious collective of international experts on recess. Truly, I am in the presence of my recess heroes. I strive to be your recess hero someday, too.
