I’ve been reading a lot about the social-emotional mental-health supports around our students in schools, whether it be the language we use, different systems in place, or different resources available in and affiliated with the schools. And as I think about all of this, and thinking about the teachers and the staff—the people who are with our children every day— perhaps we need to take a step back and just look at ourselves. We know children model what they see in us as adults, so to me we need to take advice from this little four-year-old, and practice Joy. Model it for our children and embrace it for ourselves.
